A Network Theory Revisited
نویسنده
چکیده
this chapter I review empirical studies directly testing the hypotheses of m y 1973 paper " T h e Strength of Weak Ties" (hereafter "SWT") and work that elaborates those hypotheses theoretically or uses them to suggest new empirical research not discussed in my original formulation. Along the way, I will reconsider various aspects of the theoretical argument, attempt to plug some holes, and broaden its base. The Argument Recapitulated T h e argument asserts that our acquaintances (weak ties) are less likely to be socially involved with one another than are our close friends (strong ties). T h u s the set of people made u p of any individual I a m indebted to Everett Rogers who first suggested this study, inviting it for a special session of the International Communications Association meetings on the weak-ties hypothesis. T h e first version was delivered at this session in Acapulco on May 21, 1980. A version closer to the present one was delivered at the conference on Structural Analysis, April 4, 1981, SUNY-Albany. I a m indebted to participants in these two conferences for their generous comments-especially Rice. T h i s chapter has also drawn heavily from the comments and literature review of Ellen Granovetter.

متن کاملComplex and detailed balancing of chemical reaction networks revisited
The characterization of the notions of complex and detailed balancing for mass action kinetics chemical reaction networks is revisited from the perspective of algebraic graph theory, in particular Kirchhoff’s Matrix Tree theorem for directed weighted graphs. This yields an elucidation of previously obtained results, in particular with respect to the Wegscheider conditions, and a new necessary a...
متن کاملNetwork Effects Revisited: the Role of Strong Ties in Technology Selection
This paper extends the theory of network effects by moving beyond the traditional treatment of the installed base of a technology as composed of “N” identical users, each having the same effect on the rest of the users. Borrowing from social network theory, I propose the concept of strong-ties network effects as a key determinant of technology adoption in cases where several technologies compet...
متن کاملInduction of secondary axis in hydra revisited: New insights into pattern formation
In 1909, several years before the famous `Organizer’ experiments of Spemann and Mangold, Ethel Browne demonstrated induction of a secondary axis in hydra by grafting a hypostome. Based on this and subsequent work, in the late sixties, Lewis Wolpert proposed the theory of morphogen gradients and positional information. We have studied secondary axis induction by hypostome and foot tissue using t...
متن کاملUncertainties Revisited: Actor-Network Theory as a Lens for Exploring the Relationship between Uncertainties and the Quality of Participation
In this article the authors use Actor-Network Theory (ANT) to explore the relationship between uncertainties in co-design processes and the quality of participation. They investigate Latour’s (2005) discussion of uncertainties in social processes concerning the nature of actors, actions, objects, facts/matters of concern and the study of the social. To discuss uncertainties in co-design, and mo...
متن کاملCooperative network flow problem with pricing decisions and allocation of benefits: A game theory approach
Several real problems in telecommunication, transportation, and distribution industries can be well analyzed by network flow models. In revenue management, pricing plays a primary role which increases the profit generated from a limited supply of assets. Pricing decision directly affects the amount of service or product demand. Hence, in traditional maximum flow problem, we assume that the dema...
